Preparing Your Children For A Move

Moving can be stressful for your entire family. In fact, moving is often cited as one of the top 5 most stressful life events. If you have children, you may be looking for some ways to help ease the transition of a move on their lives. Here are some helpful ways to ensure that your move is smooth and comfortable for the little ones in your life.

Tips for Getting Your Children Ready for a Move

  • Explain the situation and get them ready: Before you begin to pack boxes, ideally 1-2 months before your move, explain to your child (or children) that while you will be moving to another home, many things about life will stay just the same, including their belongings, family members, pets, etc. If you have older children, another idea is to have them make a book (drawings or photos) with pictures of the house you are leaving to take with you to your new home.
  • Visit the new area: If possible, take time with the kids to explore the area of the new home, before you move.  Visit any parks nearby, take a walk, meet any new neighbors you see playing outdoors and ask around for restaurants, ice cream shops, libraries and other places your kids will find fun and exciting. This may help them look forward to living in a new location.
  • Allow them to be upset: Particularly if the move means leaving a loved one, favorite babysitter or neighbor, allow your child to be upset, sad or even angry. This is part of the normal grieving process for them and they will ultimately do better if they are allowed to process the loss. Writing letters, scheduling visits, FaceTime and phone calls can help them feel close to these loved ones even after the move.
  • Stay on your schedule: Transitions are difficult for kids, from young to old. The more stability you can provide during the move the better. Keep your younger kids on their nap and bedtime schedule. Even small things can help with this transition, like a favorite set of sheets, a favorite blanket on the couch or a favorite home cooked meal.
